5:48 pm - Mark Anthony's new novel, revealed

Hi, Last Rune fans! A while back I posted about Mark Anthony updating his website, and saying that he had a new book coming out under a pseudonym later in 2008.

I have discovered what his new book is! It was completely by chance; I picked it up at Barnes and Noble just because it looked interesting, read it and loved it, then got suspicious when reading the author bio, then started seeing all kinds of connections, and finally had the brains to look on the copyright page, which confirmed it. (The full story of my detective quest can be found here.)

It's called The Magicians and Mrs. Quent, and it's by "Galen Beckett" (who shares a first initial and a last name with the heroine of The Last Rune, who was a physician like the classical natural philosopher Galen). It's the first in a fantasy trilogy, and it's inspired both in subject matter and in writing style by the novels of Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte (though of course it also has a lot of Anthony's distinctive style and concerns, which is much of what made me suspicious). It's definitely worth picking up if you liked The Last Rune!

3:45 am - New Mark Anthony book

Hi everyone! New to the eldh community, though not to the Last Rune series; I discovered the first book not long after it came out, and waited eagerly for each new book. Needless to say, after The First Stone, I kept waiting and waiting for Mark Anthony to release something new - either another Eldh book or a new series - and nothing happened. (Most of you were probably in the same situation.)

However, earlier this month the author updated his website to announce that yes, he is still alive, and moreover he's got a new fantasy book coming out later this year! It's not set in the world of Eldh, and apparently it will be different enough from his previous series to warrant publication under a different name (which remains a mystery, and I imagine will until the new book comes out). But still, for all you who liked his previous books, hopefully it'll make your day to hear that he'll have a new one out (I know it made mine!).

I must confess, I also feel a bit proud because I sent him an e-mail basically saying "hi, I love your books, are you working on anything new" right before he made this new post, so even though I'm sure my message had nothing to do with his announcement of his new work I still like to feel it did, heh.

So, this is just a heads-up for any of you who liked his books and may not yet have been aware he's got another one on the way.

11:18 pm - *squees*

I'm almost hyperventilating with happiness! A TLR comm! I can't wait to get posting and discussing with other fans, since I only know two people who read TLR, and both borrow the books from me. Neither of them are up to TFS yet, so I need to talk about it before I explode!

OK...calm now.

UK fan here, got my copy of The First Stone off Amazon on Tuesday. I was reading it at work, and if I hadn't been at work, I would have been in tears. It's all over!

Some thoughts on TFSCollapse )

I got my copy on Thursday and finished it on Friday. Just... wow.

Anyone want to strike up a discussion? Favorite or least favorite parts? Random things that made you squee?

a few thoughts, spoiler-cutCollapse )

Obviously, the comments for this will also have spoilers.

Ooh, a LiveJournal for what is quite possibly the best fantasy series in existence!

As a rule I don't read serials (they're almost invariably dull and poorly-written, but just complex enough that you want to read the rest of the dull and poorly-written books and find out what happens), but for some reason "Beyond the Pale" kept grabbing my eye at the library. I can't tell you how glad I am that it did. And despite my constant prodding, I don't know anyone else who's read 'em. I've bene having really bad luck lately with all of the books I buy being duds, but it's a relief to know that there's at least one more upcoming release that I can rely on for quality!

And the thought that prompted the Goggle search that led me here: very slight spoilers for the latest Harry Potter movieCollapse )

Does anybody else feel like they might not remember the first five books well enough to really get the sixth? It's been a while since I finished.

If more people read this thing, I bet there'd be a guide on-line or something.

3:22 pm - Synchronicity

I was actually looking for a community on spiders when I happened upon this one. I've just finished the first 5 books. And no one I've talked to about them in real life has ever heard of them. So, I am so glad to find all of you. The funny thing is, as I was trolling for spider communities, the Spiders of Eldh did cross my mind for a fleeting second. Synchronicity I suppose.

2:01 pm - Nifty things.

Here's a few interesting links which you may or may not have seen before.

A Beyond the Pale quiz.

A list of runes with ASCII pictures.

The King of Winter, a short story by Mark Anthony set at the founding of Calavan.

A Last Rune Yahoo group. Mostly dead, the posts come from members who introduce themselves and then sink into lurking, and my own random flailing as I try and fail to revive the group.

I believe this is pretty much every Last Rune site out there. A depressingly short list, isn't it.

10:16 pm - Starting of with a question

Hi all!

I plan to make some TLR LJ Icons, and now I have come across a wall, and I don't have the books with me right now.

The three parallel lines from the rune of hope, are they horizontal or vertical?
